Budo Lighthouse
Budo Lighthouse

Located at the gateway of Incheon Port, Budo had a lighthouse installed in 1904, earlier than many other places. This lighthouse is equipped with all the essential nautical aids, such as visual, radio, and sound aids to navigation, commensurate with the importance of its position. The lighting tower is 16 meters tall and 3 meters in diameter and emits flashes every 15 seconds.

In 2001, a large rotating lighthouse lantern fitted with a domestic prism lens was installed for the first time in Korea. Its enhanced illuminating power reached ships approximately 50km away. Because of a large tidal range and strong tidal currents which made it difficult to sail here, tidal current aid systems that can measure tidal currents and strengths were installed in May 2005. Since then, Budo Lighthouse has provided users with real-time tide information, thereby contributing to the safe navigation of ships entering and departing from Incheon port.

Tip

The name Budo (鳧島) is thought to have originated from the island’s resemblance to a wild duck that enjoys taking a nap on water. Another name is Dokkebi (goblin) Island, as people believed there were many Dokkebies (goblins) on this island. It is said that people mixed blood (血, pi) with salt (鹽, yeom) to drive away these Dokkebies because goblins hate the mixture. That is why it is also referred to as Piyeomdo.
