Palmido Lighthouse
A white lighthouse stands high at Palmido, a small island located 15.7㎞ south of Incheon Port. Located at the entrance of the ship route to Incheon port, it serves as an indicator of safe navigation for a ship entering and departing from a port.
The Palmido lighthouse started to run as the 1st lighthouse in Korea in June 1903. It still stands as it did back then and is conserved as local cultural asset No. 40 in Incheon City after the conclusion of its duty over the past 100 years.
Now, the new Palmido lighthouse is composed with facilities such as an 26-meter tall observatory, a symbolic structure (light of a thousand years) commemorating the 100th anniversary, a Differential GPS Reference Station, and other high-tech equipment after its renovation in December, 2003.
The lighthouse lantern is a large-scale prism lens based rotating lantern made in Korea. The range of its illumination reaches 50 kilometers and it flashes every 10 seconds. What is more, Palmido is home to diverse wild plants such Pueraria lobata, Antipathes japonica, Parthenocissus tricuspidata, and Dianthus chinensis.
